The Art of Cooking Starts with the Right Kitchen

Cooking is an experience, not just a task. Here is how layout, storage and appliances either help you or quietly get in your way.

Kitchen laid out for cooking, with prep space beside the range

Cooking has always been more than preparing a meal. There is a rhythm to it, and a kitchen either supports that rhythm or interrupts it a dozen times an evening.

Start with where you stand

Most cooking happens in a small triangle between the sink, the range and the refrigerator. If that triangle is crossed by a walkway, an island corner or a badly placed door, you feel it every single day. We look at this first, before anything decorative gets decided.

Prep space is the thing people underestimate

Ask someone what they want from a new kitchen and they rarely say counter space. Ask them what frustrates them about their current one and it is almost always the first thing mentioned. A clear run beside the range is worth more than an extra cabinet.

Appliances belong in the design, not after it

Choosing appliances alongside the cabinetry means the clearances, the door swings and the panel fronts are all planned together. Chosen afterwards, they are made to fit, and that shows.

If your kitchen is fighting you, come and talk to a designer at one of our showrooms. Bring photographs and a list of what annoys you. That list is the most useful thing you can hand us.
